Malaga airport dropped to sixth place in Spain last month

The incessant trickle of loss of passengers that Malaga airport has registered since the beginning of the year has caused a drop of positions in the national ranking and now finds itself in sixth place by volume of passengers at the end of this trimester. The figures provided yesterday by Aena show an amount of 1.9 million travellers that have passed through this terminal until March, which means a 6% decrease compared to the same period last year. This figure comes from a new descent of five points that it experienced during last month.

This evolution has caused that ahead of the Malaga – Costa del Sol airport, the order is Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Gran Canaria and South Tenerife, this last one with a 6% increase of traveller activity. However, regarding operations it’s currently in fifth position in Spain, in front of South Tenerife, with 18.447 flights until March. This figure means a fall of 8.7%.

Andalucia

The whole lot of Andalusian airports add up a total amount of 3.434.049 passengers during the first three months of the year, in other words, almost nine points less than in the same period in 2011. Almost 50.000 operations have been registered over this trimester, that also marks a downward trend in the flights of 6.8%.

The situation of Malaga and the Andalusian terminals is in keeping with the evolution registered nationally. The airports of Aena’s network have lost 5.3% of passengers in the first three months of the year, up to 37.6 million, while the downfall has been steeper in the month of March, by 7%, up to 14.2 million travellers.

The network’s main airport, Madrid-Barajas, registered a significant decrease of 8.8% in March’s traffic, until transporting a total of 3.7 million travellers, while the Barcelona-El Prat airport experienced a slight decrease of 0.5%, transporting 2.6 million travellers. During the past month of March, the Spanish airports operated 156.123 flights, 10.4% less, while the first trimester’s downfall is reduced to 8.9%.

The seasonality is still affecting the air sector, that hopes to improve in April with the launching of the high season program.

Car hire from Malaga airport, what should we know?

Tourists visiting Malaga and the Costa del Sol usually plan well in advance their visit, even more if it’s not their first time coming to Malaga. The main reason for this is that Malaga is a very popular destination, and if our holiday on the Costa del Sol includes accommodation, car hire in Malaga or any other tourist service, it is very recommended to book online those services in advance.

Why hiring a car in Malaga?

Well…this question is very easy to answer. If you are coming to the Costa del Sol, just for sunbathing, beach and resting in your hotel room, then maybe you don’t need to hire a car, or maybe you will be fine with a transfer or a cheap car hire from Malaga airport. Is this your case?

On the other side, if you are looking to explore the different towns in Malaga, to enjoy the natural beaches from other areas of the province or to visit some of the many events present in Malaga, then…hiring a car is more than recommended.

What kind of car should I hire?

This depends directly on many other things: Are you coming with a friend or with the family? Hiring a minivan would be a nice option for those who need the extra space, a luxury car or spacious car will provide the required comfort for driving longer distances.

If you just want to enjoy the surroundings, closer towns, or you just don’t want to spend much on the vehicle, there are many cheap car rentals available which will cost less than using a taxi

What company should I choose for car hire in Malaga?

There are many online websites offering cheap car hire at Malaga airport, however most of them are online brokers. What does it mean to you? Well…they claim to be the best, but they are not even directly related to a rent a car company, so they are just selling something they don’t even know if it´s good enough for their visitors, and not only this…it is very usual those websites let you hire your vehicle from a worldwide provider such Avis, Goldcar, Europcar…which will bill you a full fuel tank on pickup…so the price even increase…but we can’t expect much more, as it is a resold service, you are not using a first tier car hire supplier.

My tip is to hire always from the best local company at or next to the main airport in the city, and this applies to any destination we choose.  Below you will find some websites I recommend you to check:

Malagacar.com  will pick you up at Malaga airport arrivals, and return you departures when leaving. The trust and competitive prices this company have generated over the years is well worth and it is the supplier of many other online websites and travel agents. If you need to hire a car for the first time or you need to try another because you were not satisfied with your first experience, just give it a try and get back to this blog to tell me your experiences, you will not regret.

Malaga tourism tips:

Do not forget to reserve the vehicle at least 1 month in advance. Malaga being a popular destination may run out of available vehicles in summer season and prices may be expensive.

If you like driving or getting to Malaga white villages or to discover Andalucia, I recommend hiring a comfortable car instead a cheap car rental; it is better to drive comfortable than wishing to reach our destination because we are tired of driving.

Malagacar.com is a professional company at Malaga airport with many years of experience. You can hire the car just providing your flight number and they will pick you up at Malaga airport.

Malaga airport (code AGP) is an international airport in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and is located about ten kilometers southwest of the city of Malaga. It is the main airport in the region of Andalusia and the fourth largest Spanish Airport. Meanwhile approaching the Airport opens a fantastic view over the sparkling blue sea and the mountains. The airport is served by many international airlines including Air Berlin, British Airways, Delta Airlines, German Wings, Iberia, Lufthansa, Ryanair, SAS Scandinavian and TUIfly.

Although at the airport are available more than 20 car rental companies, only about ten of them operate in the terminal. Other offices are located near the car park P1 and around the airport. Some of the companies are using free shuttle buses; others work by phone or through a customer service representative at the airport. It is advisable to inform in advance exactly about the provider and who wants to save money, should book the car well in advance.
