The biggest sailing ship company in the world chooses Malaga as its base port until 2013

April 25, 2012 2 comments

The American sailing ship company, the biggest in the world, launches in Malaga a new way to travel around the high seas sailing under full sail and places Malaga port on the map of luxury cruises. Star Clippers, the one that all the rest of the companies of these type of small passenger ships look up to, those that combine the tradition with the services of a tourist capable of paying a minimum of two thousand euros for a seven-day trip, has chosen Malaga portas its base for its 2012 and 2013 program. Therefore, the announcement of placing a ship in Malaga to schedule five regular departures as from September this year and the same next year, is an extra value for the port of the Costa del Sol’s capital, beyond the volume of passengers that this sailing ship company moves.

Marie Krafft, the company’s sales manager, advanced yesterday on one of the decks of the Royal Clipper, under the ship’s five masts, that they have programed a one-week cruise with the Star Flyer, that will be leaving Malaga to sail around the coasts of Andalusia and Morocco, as from the 15th of September till the 20th of October. Furthermore, she also advanced that for the 2013 program, that’s still in process, they’ll be contemplating this port once again to schedule many other departures with embarkation and disembarkation in Malaga.

The Star Flyer, with four masts and 16 sails, that will be based in Malaga, can carry 170 passengers that will be able to discover Tangier and Casablanca, flanking the mountains of the Atlas, Cadiz, Gibraltar and Motril. “We trust that the response of the national market proves that there is potential for these type of cruises that combine activities of a smooth adventure, the introduction to sailing and some romantic routes. Our clients, from 25 different nationalities, are people in search of something very different. In a way, it’s as if we have gone back in time 100 years”, said Krafft.

In 1885 Carl F. Benz built a tricycle with an internal combustion engine and from then begins the long history of motor vehicles. The cars in the beginning were an elite machine, accessible only to the wealthy classes. In Spain became the first vehicle registered in October 1900.

Malaga was not blind to these revolutionary changes and in August 1907 took place the registration of the first automobile in the province. The history of the car in Malaga is guarded from this year by the Provincial Historic Archive.

MA-5 is the first conserved registration in Malaga. Its owner, businessman Francisco Alvarez drove a Rocher Schneider model of 16 PS and four cylinders. Due to its high cost and difficulties in the acquisition, the first owners are the most wealthy and businessmen in the province, as Felix Saenz or Larios.

Another conclusion of these documents the increase of registrations in the 60′s and 70′s, a clear reflection of the increasing economic wealth in the province. There was a large proliferation of imported vehicles due to the presence of foreign residents on the Costa del Sol and the proximity of Gibraltar.

A Fuengirola based company is set to launch an alternative way of travelling between Malaga and the rest of the Costa del Sol: water taxis.

A group of entrepreneurs have brought from Southampton in the UK, one of the boats they plan to use to connect Malaga and Marbella within 45 minutes.

They are negotiation with national shipyards the manufacturing of the rest of boats needed to provide the service, which it plans to extend all the way along the coast to Gibraltar and “in the medium term will run all the way up to Nerja and Almuñecar linking the east and west”, the company said in a statement.

Under the same Aqua Taxi, each boat will be able to carry up to 12 passengers.

It is hoped that the Aqua Taxi service, which will be based at Malaga port, will be up and running before Easter.

The home port for the fleet will be Malaga harbour, with the main information point at the crossroads between Pier 1 and 2; this will be the main nerve centre of the new harbour, a must for cruise-ship passengers.

The company also has authorisation to operate from Marbella, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and is hoping to get permission in Puerto Banus, being an alternative to the Malaga airport transfers.

Panorámica Benalmádena

The cable car in Benalmadena / Arroyo de la Miel offers visitors the possibility of great views over the Mediterranean Sea and on clear days even of Sierra Nevada, Gibraltar and the African coast. The recreation and leisure centre at the top of Mount Calamorro offers an eagle centre, falconry show, dressage show and, in summer, an astronomical observation area; furthermore there is a restaurant.

To the offer of great viewpoints and rest areas has now been added a guided, comfortable hiking path among pines and typical mediterranean vegetation, about 800 metres over sea level, for visitors of all ages. The trail is about three kilometres long and has duration of approximately 90 minutes.

Getting to Benalmadena is easy using the public transport or our own vehicle if we opted for Malaga car hire at our arrival to Malaga airport.
